Six suspects arrested shortly after committing a business robbery

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Free State, Major General Solly Lesia commended the swift response by Smithfield and neighboring police stations that led to the apprehension of six suspects shortly after a crime was perpetrated.

It is alleged by the complainant that on Monday, 05 April 2021, at about 23:50, two unknown males came knocking on the door at Asha Bottle store in Mofulatsepe, Smithfield. As the complainant approached the door, he was pointed with firearms and instructed to open the burglar door.

The suspects reportedly robbed him of a Plasma TV and an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspects fled the scene in a Black Mazda 3 vehicle with an NP registration. No one was injured and no shots were fired during the robbery.

The police were notified and reacted swiftly to the complaint. On their way to the scene, members passed a vehicle that matched the description as given by the complainant. They called for backup and followed the vehicle to the N6 towards Reddersburg where it was intercepted. During the search three firearms, three magazines, 24 live rounds of ammunition, and the Plasma TV were recovered inside the vehicle.

A total of six suspects, five males and a female aged between 26 and 41 were arrested and they will appear in Smithfield Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 08 April 2021 on charges of business robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
