Port Shepstone resident robbed by a facebook friend in Verulam

A 30-year-old female who traveled 150 kilometers from Port Shepstone to Verulam in Kwazulu Natal to meet her Facebook
friend for the third time was robbed at a local fast food outlet by the man.

The female, a frontline worker in the medical field flagged down a passing Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) vehicle at approx 10:32 this morning (Monday) seeking assistance after a male that she considered her boyfriend, robbed her of her valuables at McDonald’s.

Reaction Officers interviewed the female who explained that she had befriended the man on Facebook approx 14 months ago. He had met her twice before in Port Shepstone and they had kept in touch via video call since. This morning she traveled from her hometown to the corner of Todd & Russom Street in Verulam and met the man inside the restaurant. The man had suggested that they meet to discuss premises he had found so they both could move in together. The discussion would also include a transfer from her current workplace to a Medical Facility closer to the North Coast.

During the conversation, the man insisted that the woman pay for their order at Mcdonald’s and promised that he would pay the bill on the next date. Few minutes into their meeting the man took her mobile Phone a Samsung J7, a Calvin Klein watch, and her wallet with her bank cards and ID before fleeing. The watch was given to the victim by her mother as a gift for her 30th birthday tomorrow. The victim showed Officers several pictures of the man and provided a detailed description of the vehicle that had dropped him off.

Reaction officers were briefed on the description of the suspect, shown images, and provided with details of the vehicle used. RUSA Members then went in search of the man and managed to identify his residence and family members. The suspect could not be located.

The search was called off when the female declined to open a criminal case.
