Police vigilance led to the arrest of four suspected robbers and the recovery of a firearm

Police officers from the Umbilo Task Team were on patrol last night when they spotted a vehicle with four men outside a fast food outlet on Rick Turner Road.

When the police officers approached the vehicle, the suspects sped off. A chase ensued towards the Cato Manor sports ground where the suspects were intercepted. One of the occupants alighted from the vehicle and pointed a firearm at the police officers. The suspect was shot in the thigh during the confrontation. All four suspects aged between 20 and 25 were placed under arrest.

The injured suspect was found in unlawful possession of a revolver with five rounds of ammunition. The suspects were also found in possession of a replica firearm and house-breaking implements. The injured suspect was taken to the hospital where he is under police guard. The arrested suspects will be profiled to establish if they are linked to other robberies and serious cases committed in Umbilo and surrounding areas.

Charges of pointing of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as possession of housebreaking implements were opened at Umbilo SAPS. The suspects will appear before the Durban Magistrates Court tomorrow.
