Supporting the Hout Bay community through harsh winter months

Mustadafin Foundation serves the underprivileged communities of Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Zimbabwe. “Imagine fighting a losing battle with buckets as you try to keep water out of your home, trying to keep your children dry and warm; this, unfortunately, is the story for many residents living in informal settlements.,” shares Ghairunisa Johnstone, director of Mustadafin Foundation. “So far, this winter over 80 informal and formal dwellings have been affected in Hout Bay alone, impacting more than 120 people.

The heavy rains that we saw last week overburdened the existing stormwater gulley at the top of the settlements. This resulted in excessive stormwater run-off through the homes. Even the concrete walls and foundations of formal dwellings had been cracked with the force of the sand and rainwater, leaving places completely flooded.

Much needed relief was provided by Mustadafin, who donated blankets, warm clothes, bags of porridge, and soap to those affected.

“As winter is far from over, we expect more harsh weather to impact informal settlements. We are pleading to the public to support us with essential winter supplies and donations, to keep our relief efforts going. We are in desperate need of critical winter supplies including winter garments, mattresses, blankets as well as groceries,” shares Johnstone.
