Active community participation in prevention of Stock Theft leads to apprehension of suspects and recovery of livestock

The active involvement of community members in assisting the police to prevent incidents of stock theft across the Province and the existing cooperation between the auctioneers and members of the Stock Theft Unit continue to bear fruits as more livestock were recovered and suspects apprehended.

Twenty cattle that were reported stolen at GaMatlala in the Capricorn District were recovered from an auction in Bela-Bela yesterday, Monday 02 August 2021, and a suspect was arrested.

At Sephokubje village under Sekgosese policing area in Mopani District, a 72-year-old man was reportedly awoken by the sounds of his 18 cattle being driven out of the kraal just after midnight on Sunday, 1 August 2021.

When peeping through the window, the man reportedly saw one of the suspects driving the cattle on foot while his accomplice was in a vehicle, using the headlamps to show the way. The complainant then notified the locals and the police were called. The two suspects were immediately arrested and all 18 cattle were recovered.

The suspects’ motor vehicle was searched and the police found a rifle, torch, and a knife and were all confiscated.

The vehicle, VW Polo, was also seized.

The suspects will appear in Sekgosese Magistrates’ court and Matlala Periodical Court respectively tomorrow on Wednesday 04 August 2021.
