Trio was arrested for defrauding the department of public works of R24 million

Three suspects between the age of 30 and 56 are expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court this afternoon where they will be facing allegations of fraud, theft, and contravention of the public finance management act (PFMA).

They were arrested today in the early hours of the morning by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Team based in Bloemfontein.

Their arrests stem from the incident which took place in December 2019, where three officials from the Department of Public Works in Bloemfontein, unlawfully captured and approved the payment to the Company known as Walton Trading Enterprise CC without approval to the estimated amount of R24 million.

The matter was then reported to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation for further investigation which culminated in the arrests of the trio.

The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Major General Kubandran Moodley welcomed the arrest and commended the outstanding work by the investigating officer.
