Vehicle catches alight in Verulam CBD

An elderly female and a 7-year-old girl escaped injury after the vehicle they were seated in burst into flames on Todd Street in the Verulam CBD.

Pedestrians and passing motorists contacted Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) after noticing smoke billowing out of the vehicle. RUSA members were dispatched and arrived on the scene. The fire was extinguished by a businessman who went to the aid of the child and female.

According to the owner of the grey Fiat Palio he parked his vehicle and proceeded to the bank while his wife & the child remained in the vehicle. They noticed smoke emanating from the dashboard when the car suddenly burst into flames. The driver went on to explain that he had conducted repairs to the vehicle two weeks ago. The repairs were not related to any electrical components or the fuel system.

The cause of the fire was not established.
