Tips for driving when driving in smoky conditions

One time or another, motorists have driven in smoky conditions that were caused by, for instance, a veld fire. The point is, how do we react to that to ensure safety? If you can barely see, things do become dangerous. Below are some tips to follow.1

How far can smoke travel?1

Smoke consists of tiny particles that are so small and light that they can travel for kilometres up into the air and many kilometres away from the burning area.

Reduce speed immediately1

As soon as you lose visibility as a driver, it would help if you slowed down. Slow driving gives you have enough time to respond to any obstacle lying in your way.

Close all windows1

When entering a smoky area, immediately close all windows. If you are using an air conditioner, check the air setting to ensure no air is coming in from the outside. This is crucial because you may be stuck under these conditions and avoid any harmful side effects from smoke inhalation.

Turn on your hazard lights and headlights1

If the smoke is dense, show other motorists your position on the road by turning on the hazard lights, as well as headlights or fog lights if your car has them. Focus on what lies ahead of you and drive like you would when in thick mist. Avoid sudden braking.

Beware of cattle and other animals1

A raging bush fire can force cattle and wild animals onto the road to escape the flames. So, take care and drive slowly.

What about emergency vehicles? 1

There may be ambulances or fire-fighting trucks racing towards the area, so be ready to pull over and let them pass.

Complete avoidance may be the best1

Before embarking on a journey, it’s always wise to establish that nothing untoward is likely to happen along your planned route.

Pull over if you can’t see at all1

This is the last resort, but no one must continue to drive if visibility is close to zero. Ensure that your hazard lights are on, showing any approaching car your position on the road.

Don’t be the cause of veld fires and smoke1

At certain times of the year, certain areas of South Africa can be tinder dry and thus take all steps to prevent any fires from occurring in those areas. Stopping along the side of the road for a break is OK but avoid making a braai as any sparks could set off a difficult situation. Similarly, avoid throwing a burning cigarette out of a travelling car. Don’t drive over an area of dry grass stubble, as the heat of the car’s exhaust could set off a veld fire.

Being stuck inside a bad smoky area could result in an accident. This is where you need to know that your car has adequate car insurance cover for peace of mind.
