Ethekwini opens all closed beaches with immediate effect

Following the latest test results carried out at all beaches affected by high levels of E-coli, the City has taken a decision to open them for bathing and other sporting activities, with immediate effect.

This decision excludes the Blue Lagoon/Umngeni Beach, where E-coli levels are still not permitting for it to be opened to the public.

On all other beaches, tests results have shown a substantial decrease of the bacteria to acceptable standards.
The City will continue to monitor the Blue Lagoon/uMngeni Beach and inform the public once levels of E-coli have decreased to standards that are safe for the public to enjoy it.

In the interest of public safety and with heavy downpours expected in catchment areas of rivers that empty their waters to the City’s beaches, regular tests are going to be conducted to ensure good water quality.

The City would like to thank the public for its unrelenting cooperation when the beaches were closed and reiterate its heartfelt apology to all its stakeholders, for being on the receiving end of the closure.
