Manhunt launched for vigilantes after unknown man was brutally assaulted and set alight

The Police in Giyani has launched a manhunt for the suspects after an unknown man was brutally assaulted and set alight during an incident of vigilantism that allegedly took place at Sikhunyani village under Giyani policing area on Friday 08 April 2022.

The man was brutally assaulted by the local community members who accused him of stealing a Plasma TV. The victim was allegedly cornered while inside a taxi to Giyani town and was dragged out by the angry mob. He was then assaulted with stones and other objects while being forced to take them to the house where he stole the TV set. They then set him alight.

The Police were called and managed to rescue the victim as the vigilantes fled in different directions. The victim was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to the injuries.

The victim’s identity is still unknown at this stage. He was wearing only black and blue sneakers written “Jordan”.
Police are appealing to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects or that can assist in locating the family of deceased to contact Warrant Officer Zondiwe Baloyi on 082 414 6709 or the Crime Stop number 086001011 or the nearest police station.
