Murder suspects arrested by off-duty police officer

Last night at 18:00, the 39-year-old businessman was gunned down at his business premises in Bergville CBD. Three gunshots rang out, the sounds were picked up by an off-duty police officer who was seated in his vehicle close to the scene of the shooting. The officer noticed two men running, and he immediately gave chase with his vehicle, until the men jumped over a fence.

He pursed them on foot and was soon joined by another three off-duty police officers who were in close proximity. The Bergville Station Commander quickly put together a team and backed her officers up. The private security officials also joined the chase. Two suspects were traced and arrested. In their possession police found a 9mm pistol which had five rounds of ammunition in its magazine.

The businessman succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Both suspects aged (20) will make their appearance in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court tomorrow for murder. The swift response and bravery of off-duty police officers and everyone who was involved in the chase are commended.
