Kagiso police putting pressure on illegal shebeens

With a number of assaults, domestic violence, attempted murders, murders and GBV related cases reported at the Police, the mushrooming of unlicensed liquor outlets contributes significantly and accounts to the aforementioned social ills that have a potential of ravaging and creating instability in the communities.

Yesterday afternoon, Police in Kagiso went all out with their consistent and intensive operation to clean up and eliminate illegal shebeens in the area.
Areas of concern included Tshepisong, Soul City, Rietvallei and Swaneville.

During the operation three (03) illegal liquor outlets were shut down and owners arrested. Of those three shebeens at Ebumnandini (Tshepisong west), two posed and displayed their businesses as spaza shops. As the police pounced on them, their refrigerators were fully loaded with beers. A total of 264 970 ml of liquor was confiscated during the closure of illegal shebeens.

The operation further registered three (03) persons who were caught driving under the influence of alcohol, one of them a taxi driver.

Members of the station’s detectives also arrested a 37-year-old woman at Azaadville Gardens for the murder of her 41-year-old husband and also defeating the ends of justice. Another suspect was arrested for MITP (malicious damage to property) and DV (domestic violence).

“Such operations are here to stay and our main target remains the illegal shebeens which contribute immensely to crime in the area” warned Brigadier Maduna as he thanked his members for their efforts.

All arrested suspects are expected to appear before the Kagiao magistrate’s court on Monday 9th May 2022.
