Suspects face charges in court for the illegal possession of firearms and drugs

Continued efforts to improve the safety and lives of ordinary citizens in this Province through high density operations and the strategic deployment of integrated forces reaped positive results with the arrests of various suspects as well of the confiscation of drugs.

On Sunday 21 May 2023 at about 21:30 members attached to Operation Restore deployed in Gugulethu followed up on information about a premises selling dagga in Tambo Square Gugulethu. On arrival at the premises a search was conducted which resulted in the discovery of a batch of dagga bankies, cigarettes and dagga parcels. An undisclosed amount of cash was also found and confiscated as proceeds of the illegal drug trade. A 49-year-old man was subsequently arrested for dealing and possession of dagga. He is scheduled to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ court once charged.

On Monday 22 May 2023 at about 09:30 members of the Economic and Extortion Task Team received information about an unknown suspect who was selling drugs at Mew Way informal settlement in Site B Khayelitsha. The members reacted swiftly and on arrival at the premises they conducted a search. During the search, the members discovered a large quantity of drugs with an estimated value of R15 000-00. Cash to the amount of R4410-00 was also seized which is believed to be the proceeds of crime. The 45-year-old suspect was arrested for dealing in drugs and will appear at the Khayelitsha Magistrates court once charged

Meanwhile, members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit arrested a 32-year-old woman yesterday, Tuesday, 23 May 2023 while deployed in Manenberg policing precinct to police and prevent ongoing gang violence in the area. The team responded to information of a possible firearm at a house in Jabulani Miya Street in Gugulethu. Upon arrival at the house, members ensued with a search of the premises. They found and confiscated a .38 Special revolver without a serial number and nine .38 Special rounds of ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged for the illegal possession of a prohibited firearm as well as the illegal possession of ammunition.
