Police foiled new dagga smuggling strategy

A 34-year-old Lwazi Mlotsa’s strategy to smuggle dagga was futile as he was arrested in Mahama Port of Entry on Monday, 02 October 2023.

Mlotsa, a Swazi national entered the Republic with dagga concealed in a blanket which was in a blanket bag.

Police became suspicious and scanned the blanket. A strange parcel was noticed concealed in the blanket. A physical search was conducted and two plastic bags wrapped with brown sellotape were recovered. Inside the plastic bags, a substance believed to be dagga weighing 1,646 kg were found.

The suspect was arrested and appeared before Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Tuesday 03 October 2023.

He was remanded in custody for a formal bail application scheduled for Wednesday 11 October 2023.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela hailed members for conducting thorough search on migrants leaving and coming to the Republic. “Most of the country’s valuables are smuggled out of the country and deadly substances are smuggled into the country, our members are doing their best to stop these illegal movements,” said the General.
