The vigilance and swift response of members attached to the Anti Economic Crime Task Team and Anti Extortion Task Team landed two suspects, aged 26 and 27, behind bars on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
On Sunday, 07 January 2024 at about 15:00, the members received information about a firearm that was allegedly used in extortion incidents between two gang groupings in the Manenberg area. They operationalised the information and searched the identified address in Scheldt Walk, and confiscated a .38 revolver and ammunition hidden at the back of a nutech board in the room. The suspects were detained at Manenberg SAPS.
In an unrelated matter, members attached to Maitland Flying Squad received information last night about a suspect who was wanted in a criminal case. The members spotted the vehicle of the suspect in Philippi area. The vehicle was pulled over and two suspects, aged 29 and 35, were arrested. The vehicle was also searched and members found an unlicensed firearm and two rounds inside the vehicle. The suspects were detained at Philippi SAPS on a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Once charged, the suspects will make their respective court appearances in the Athlone Magistrates’ court on the mentioned charges.
