LEAP focusing on reducing murder but achieving other results as well

Law Enforcement officers in the Metals Theft Unit responded to a call for assistance from LEAP Law Enforcement officers based in Khayelitsha. The LEAP officers had pulled over a Volkswagen motor vehicle with a load of copper cables inside.

The Metals theft unit members responded to the complaint and upon arrival it was established that the copper cables recovered was bare overhead copper cables relating to essential infrastructure.

The two occupants of the vehicle were placed under arrest in terms of the Criminal Matters amendment act 18/2015 and secondly for the Possession of stolen property.

The copper cables was later confirmed to be the property of the City of Cape Town. +/-256kg of copper cables with a street value of R25000. This excludes the cost for the City to replace the damaged/stolen infrastructure.

The motor vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime was also impounded.
