Operation Shanela continues to yield positive results

Operation Shanela which aims at stamping authority of the State and reducing levels of crime in Gauteng Province continues to yield positive results as police arrests more than 1000 suspects get arrested for various crimes.

The multi-disciplinary Operation is conducted simultaneously throughout the five districts in the province.

The newly appointed Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni led the operation held at Ivory Park in Ekurhuleni District. The Operation resulted in the arrest of 71 people and seizure of alcohol, drugs, illicit cigarettes and recovery of one suspected stolen vehicle.

In other operations, the districts arrested a combined total of 173 suspects for various crimes including possession of unlicensed firearm, possession of drugs, drunk and driving and dealing with liquor without a license and undocumented person.

Meanwhile the detectives arrested more than eight hundred and fifty wanted suspects for murder, assault GBH, rape, armed robbery and attempted murder amongst others.

Some suspects have been released after paying fines while the others are expected to appear before various Magistrates’ Court starting from 04 March 2024.

Lieutenant General Mthombeni applauded all the law enforcement and statekeholders for their continued efforts and commitment in ensuring that criminal activities are minimised in the province.
