Double drug bust for Beaufort West police

Beaufort West police have attacked drug dealers on the N1 main road near Beaufort West twice in three days, seizing drugs worth about R900 000.

“Police are conducting a vigorous fight against drugs in the Central Karoo and the Western Cape as a whole, aiming to combat the influx of drugs to the province.” This was done through strategic deployments of police officers along highways and byways. We are already seeing success in confiscating drugs during these operations,” police spokesperson Sergeant Christopher Spies said this morning, 27 April, after drugs with an estimated street value of R900 000 were confiscated along the N1 at Beaufort West in the Central Karoo.

On Saturday 26 April 2025, at around 19:45, members of the Central Karoo flash patrol manned a vehicle checkpoint at the entrance to Beaufort West on the N1. They pulled a Toyota RAV4. The members smelled the smell of marijuana and immediately began a search of the vehicle, during which they found nine bags of marijuanna, hidden under a blanket in the back of the vehicle. The marijuana has an estimated street value of R823 000. The 45-year-old driver has been arrested.

This drug bust comes only two days after the same flash patrol members, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, carried out a roadblock on the N1 on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at around 17:30. There they preferred a Toyota Hilux pickup.

“The members searched the vehicle and found a suitcase with 16 packets of marijuana inside.” The marijuana, with an estimated street value of R90 000, was confiscated. A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this seizure,” says Spies.

Both suspects remain in police custody and are expected to make their first appearance in Beaufort West Magistrate’s Court on drug trafficking charges on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

The Western Cape police management has praised the team for their efforts to curb the drug flow to the province cage. “These arrests and confiscations form part of ongoing crime combat and road safety operations.” The operations will continue over the long weekend and afterwards,” Spies said.
