A multi-disciplinary team executing Operation Vala Umgodi in the Northern Cape successfully apprehended two suspects during a routine patrol of the Ikapa mining area on Friday, 02 May 2025.
The arrests were made for violations of the Illicit Mining and Immigration Acts, as well as alleged trespassing.
In the Frances Baard District, Kimberley, a 47-year-old undocumented foreign national was arrested for illicit mining and contravening immigration laws, while a 34-year-old South African citizen was detained for illegal mining activities.
A variety of illicit mining tools were confiscated, including homemade sieves, a wheelbarrow, spades, picks, and shovels.
Both suspects are scheduled to appear before court soon.
The police remain committed to intensifying efforts to combat illegal mining in the Northern Cape.
