A Mozambican national was arrested with a hunting rifle durinan g anti-poaching patrol in Kruger National Park

A Mozambican national has been arrested during an anti-poaching patrol after he was found in possession of a hunting rifle in the Kruger National Park at approximately 08:20 on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.

According to reports, rangers were on patrol in the Houtboschrand Ranger Section when they discovered human spoor. While following the spoor, the rangers encountered two males, one of whom was armed with a hunting rifle. The rangers ordered the suspect to drop the weapon, but instead, both individuals fled the scene.

A chase ensued, and the rangers successfully apprehended one of the suspects. Upon arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a hunting rifle and nine (09) rounds of ammunition.

The arrested suspect is facing charges of:
• Possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,
• Trespassing in the park, and
• Contravention of the Immigration Act.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Masoyi Periodical Court on Wednesday, 18 June 2025, to face the said charges.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, welcomed the arrest and commended the rangers for their vigilance and dedication in protecting the country’s natural heritage.
