Individual operations lead to several arrests and unlicensed firearms and ammunition recovered

Vigilant SAPS members have set their sights on ridding Cape Town communities from suspects in possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition.

On 05 July 2025 at 11:45 members attached to K9 Cape Town and the Provincial Operation Command Centre Combat Team arrested two adult males for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition

The members followed up on information received about a silver/grey VW Polo that is involved with extortion and that the occupants thereof are going to collect money at a shopping mall in Somerset West. The members placed themselves in positions, and the vehicle was then spotted leaving the mall direction to the N2 highway. The members pulled the vehicle over on the N2 before Mew Way Road and searched the occupants and vehicle. A silver Norinco firearm with15 rounds was found hidden away under the front passenger seat. The firearm and ammunition were confiscated and handed in at Khayelitsha SAPS as exhibits. The vehicle was booked in at Stikland for processing and further investigation.

In an unrelated matter, while doing routine patrols in Inpuaanga Street, N2 Gateway, Delft SAPS members stopped and searched a suspicious looking male. They found him in possession of a 9mm Norinco and seven rounds of ammunition. He was not in possession of a valid license to possess the firearm. The 22-year-old male was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Also on Saturday morning, 05 July 2025 at about 01:45, Atlantis police members were doing patrols including stop and searches in Sherwood Park area.

A suspicious looking 17-year-old male was stopped and searched in Buffelsnek Street, Sherwood Park, Atlantis, and found to be in possession of a firearm and ammunition. The 9mm pistol with seven rounds of ammunition found in the possession of the suspect was confiscated and he was arrested.

Meanwhile on 04 July 2025 at 23:00, a 20-year-old male residing at Buick Street, Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain was found to be in possession of a Llama .45 ACP pistol with eight .45 rounds of ammunition. He was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Further investigations indicates that the firearm was reported stolen on a Mitchells Plain case.

All the recovered firearms will be subjected to a ballistic test to determine whether it can be linked to other serious crimes committed. Once charged the suspects are expected to appear in respectively the Khayelitsha, Bellville, Atlantis and Mitchells Plain Magistrate court’s on their mentioned charges

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile praised the members for their efforts in making these actions successful and ensuring that communities are safe guarded against criminals who think they can keep communities hostage. He added that these operations would continue and to ensure that there are more boots on the ground in our communities. He urged communities to report crime to their nearest police station, SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or alternatively leave an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.
