Joint Vala Umgodi disruptive operation targets illegal mining in Sekhukhune District

On 15 August 2025, the Sekhukhune Vala Umgodi task team conducted a joint disruptive operation in Sekhukhune District. The operation was intelligence-driven and supported by aerial reconnaissance, with a helicopter hovering over identified hotspot areas to assist in real-time coordination.

At approximately 10:55, information from crime intelligence indicated illegal mining activities were taking place on site within the identified hotspots in Thaba Balotsaneng and Maponong village. The entire joint operation proceeded to the alleged site, with the helicopter providing aerial monitoring and guidance. On arrival, the team managed to apprehend one adult male and two adult females for illegal mining activities. On-site seizures included two wheelbarrows, a shovel, and a bucket, which were linked to the illicit operation.

The Vala Umgodi team then continued its joint operations toward Mooihoek, where six additional adult males were arrested in connection with illegal mining activities.

The SAPS remains committed to disrupting illegal mining networks, protecting communities, and safeguarding the environment.
