Green Mustang roars into FoM history

The Festival of Motoring will make automotive history this year. MasterDrive in association with the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) and Automotive Remanufacturers’ Association (ARA), a constituent Association of the RMI, will debut the FoM Green – South Africa’s first LPG Autogas-powered performance vehicle.

The specially converted Ford Mustang 5.0 GT is a first at the Festival of Motoring (FoM). CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, expands: “It is a fusion of environmental consciousness and high-performance driving. The retrofitted Mustang runs on LPG Autogas and is a tangible demonstration that sustainable motoring does not need to compromise on the thrill of performance vehicles.

“It is a reimagining of alternative fuel vehicles. The Mustang retains its formidable 328kW V8 engine. It is still capable of launching from 0-100 km/h in under five seconds and reaching a top speed of 250 km/h,” says Herbert.

The roar car enthusiasts know and love remains unchanged. National Director of the Automotive Remanufacturers’ Association (ARA), Attie Serfontein, says: “The difference is it significantly reduces environmental impact. The Autogas-powered Mustang proves performance can go green. It showcases LPG Autogas as a viable alternative to maintain the driving experience while delivering cleaner emissions and reduced carbon footprint.”

Retail Motor Industry’s (RMI) CEO Ipeleng Mabusela says the initiative is part of RMI’s GreenDrive Project. “GreenDrive reflects the RMI’s strategy to not only support members, but inspire South Africa’s transition to cleaner, more efficient mobility solutions. Over the last five years the RMI successfully piloted Autogas as a viable alternative energy option for the immediate future.”

MasterDrive understands environmental consciousness extends beyond one retrofitted vehicle and their commitment does not stop there. “Consequently, MasterDrive partnered with an NPO, GREENPOP, to further offset the carbon footprint of their vehicles.

“With a fleet of nine Mustangs, a Ferrari, and a Porsche, we acknowledge the fuel footprint. Consequently, one-third of our total fuel use for the event will be offset through tree planting projects driven by GREENPOP.”

This historic debut represents more than just technological innovation – it signals a shift toward sustainable performance motoring. “The gas-powered Mustang demonstrates that environmental responsibility and automotive excitement can coexist,” says Herbert.

The Festival of Motoring is from 29-31 August 2025 at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.
