A prayer service at Zayoni Kingdom Catholic Church on Lily Road in Waterloo – KZN, was disrupted when two armed suspects entered the premises, holding approximately 60 congregants at gunpoint this afternoon (Friday).
Eyewitnesses informed members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) that the suspects, dressed entirely in black, entered the church during the service at approximately 21:00. The men were brandishing firearms. They demanded mobile phones from the congregation, collecting a total of 46 devices, which they placed into a plastic packet before fleeing the scene. It remains unclear whether the suspects escaped on foot or used a vehicle. The congregation included minors and adults.
No injuries were reported.
