Armed Break-In and Shooting at Siphesihle Secondary School, Verulam

A security guard was shot and injured during an armed break-in at Siphesihle Secondary School in Cottonwood, Verulam, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 24 September 2025.

Just after 00h45 AM, KZNVIP Control Centre received reports of gunfire in progress at the school and immediately dispatched all available response officers.

Upon arrival, KZNVIP officers made contact with the on site security guard, a 62 year old male, who reported that a group of eight suspects had broken the lock and chain on the school’s main office door and gained entry. It is currently unconfirmed what was taken from the office.

While conducting his patrols, the security guard heard noises and noticed the suspects, who then opened fire, shooting him in the leg before stealing his cellphone. The suspects fled towards the school gate, where they encountered another private security response officer. Shots were fired at the officer’s vehicle, but no further injuries were sustained. SAPS attended the scene and investigations are ongoing.

KZNVIP strongly condemns this violent attack on school property and security personnel as the safety of schools and the protection of those who guard them is of high priority.
