In celebration of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Day, CrisisOnCall, BestCare Ambulance Services, and their emergency partners are empowering communities across South Africa with lifesaving skills. Throughout the week, free cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) demonstrations and training sessions have been hosted at schools, malls, and community centres nationwide. If you weren’t able to attend in person, you can still learn these vital techniques by watching the step-by-step CPR training video here: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1373658934156811
Each year, thousands of South Africans suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospitals. A powerful call to action is sweeping across the country: learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), save a life.
This year’s national awareness initiative, supported by CrisisOnCall, BestCare Ambulance Services and their emergency service partners, is shining a spotlight on the life-saving power of basic emergency skills. Under the guidance of Dr Neville Vlok and seasoned paramedic Xander Loubser, the campaign aims to equip everyday South Africans with the confidence to act in a crisis.
“It’s not just healthcare workers who save lives. Anyone, a parent, teacher, learner or worker, can learn how to start the chain of survival,” says Ruan Vermaak, Head of Marketing and Communication at CrisisOnCall.
“When someone’s heart stops beating, every second counts. Your knowledge and your hands can be the difference between a tragedy and a survival story,” adds Vermaak.
What People Can Do:
- Take part in a free CPR demonstration in your area. If you are unable to attend in person, here is a step-by-step training video: https://www.facebook.com/reel/1373658934156811
- Learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Share the message on social media with the hashtags #StartYourHeartDay or #RestartAHeartSA.
- Encourage your children, colleagues, or friends to join in, because life-saving starts with knowledge.
Facts About Cardiac Arrest
- Every year, thousands of South Africans suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospitals.
- Fewer than 15% of these patients receive immediate CPR from bystanders.
- Early CPR and defibrillation can triple survival rates.
Together, We Can Save Lives
The organisation’s paramedic teams will use the day to show that saving lives is not just for paramedics, it’s for every citizen who cares.
