The Red Cross Children’s Hospital on Thursday warned braai fires pose great danger to children.
The hospital said it has had several incidents where patients have been burnt by smouldering coals.
Professor Sebastian van As has urged people to put out their fires.
He explained, “They don’t extinguish the fire – they throw sand over the fire – and if you measure the temperature inside by a barbeque it’s over 900 degrees centigrade.”
“If children run over that they burn their feet, and we’ve had many, many accidents like that with disastrous consequences,” he said.
