HARRISMITH 18 October 2011, 04:30
A serious collision occurred this morning on the N3 highway in the direction of Harrismith. 3 vehicles, a bakkie and 2 trucks, collided with each other approximately 12 kilometres from Warden.
When ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene they could see that the collision was severe as all 3 vehicles had sustained substantial damage. The one truck’s drivers cab was completely obliterated and the bakkie had come to rest on its roof.
The cause of the collision is yet unknown, but according to witnesses all 3 vehicles had made contact with each other. After the initial collision the bakkie veered out of control before leaving the road and overturning onto its roof. The single male driver of the bakkie sustained a laceration to his face and a suspected back and neck injury. ER24 paramedics treated the man at the scene before transporting him to the Harrismith provincial hospital.
The single occupant in the truck was treated at the scene before being transported to hospital by another ambulance service. The 3 occupants in the other truck refused on-scene treatment and transportation to hospital.
Local law enforcement authorities who attended the scene will be investigating the incident further.
