The Operation Vala Umgodi task teams in the five districts of Limpopo, through strategic multidisciplinary efforts, achieved remarkable breakthroughs in the fight against illegal mining and related criminal activities. In May 2025 alone, the teams arrested a total of 230 suspects, including 30 individuals directly linked to illegal mining operations. Among those detained, 51 were South Africans, while 179 were undocumented persons, with 205 suspects deported on the spot to reinforce immigration enforcement.
The operation resulted in the confiscation of a wide array of illicit items, including 1 handgun and 59 rounds of ammunition, as well as 4 sedans, 16 trucks, 2 trailers, and 4 backhoe loaders. The team also seized 4 Phendukas, 3 Phenduka stands, 6 jackhammers, 16 wheelbarrows, 167 steel balls, 135 spades, and over 5,400 tons of chrome – a substantial blow to illegal resource extraction. Additionally, 33 cellphones, various tools, and copper rolls were confiscated, highlighting the scale of illegal activities targeted.
This success underscores the unwavering commitment of Limpopo’s law enforcement agencies to protect natural resources, uphold the rule of law, and ensure the safety of our communities. It demonstrates that strategic, collaborative efforts can deliver tangible results in combating illegal activities that threaten the integrity and economic stability of the Province. The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commends all partners and community members for their vigilance and support in this ongoing fight for a safer, lawful Limpopo
