The South African Police Service (SAPS), through the dedicated efforts of the Vala Umgodi Task Team, successfully conducted a tactical operation targeting illegal sand mining activities in Tswinga Village, Sibasa, on 9 June 2025.
At approximately 12:30, the team approached suspects at an unauthorized sand mining site. Upon detection of police presence, the suspects dispersed in various directions. During the operation, all equipment used for illegal sand mining-including shovels, wheelbarrows, and other implements-was confiscated.
Subsequently, at approximately 14:30, the police proceeded to another suspicious activity in a nearby area. Despite concerted efforts, two suspects managed to evade arrest; however, additional mining equipment was recovered. Items seized at this location include two wheelbarrows, five spades, seven steel brick molders, one panga (machete), and one pick.
The South African Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to combat illegal mining activities, which threaten community safety and deplete vital natural resources. SAPS will continue to enhance patrols and operational initiatives to protect residents and safeguard the environment.
We call upon community members to assist law enforcement by reporting any illegal mining activities or related concerns to the appropriate authorities.
