The South African Police Service (SAPS) Vala Umgodi team in Limpopo acted swiftly in response to intelligence reports concerning illegal mining operations in the Mavalani village area. On Wednesday, 10 June 2025, at approximately 16:00, the Police arrived at the Mavalani River (Nsami) to monitor and intervene in suspected unlawful mining activities.
Upon arrival, officers executed a tactical operation, resulting in the arrest of a 39-year-old female suspect of Zimbabwean nationality. The suspect is currently in custody at Giyani SAPS and faces charges related to the processing of suspected precious metals, as well as contravention of the Immigration Act for unlawful presence in the country.
During the operation, the police confiscated four shovels, three spades, and two buckets believed to be used in illegal mining activities. Additionally, on 10 June 2025, at Spitskop, Portion 6, police intercepted and confiscated approximately 98,000 tons of chromite ore, along with two wheelbarrows, a pickaxe, and a spade-significantly disrupting ongoing illegal mining activities in the area.
