The swift response from police members resulted in the detention of an adult man for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Tuesday 25 June 2025.
Police members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit, deployed in Gugulethu to combat the ongoing gang violence were conducting crime prevention initiatives when they responded to information about a firearm being stored at an address in Vukuzenzele Street in Sandile Park. The members proceeded to the mentioned address and searched the premises. Their patience were rewarded when they found a firearm with ammunition between clothing items hidden in the bathroom. The man who was present during the search could not provide a valid licence to be in possession of the mentioned firearm which resulted in his detention for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Once charged the suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on the mentioned charge.
