On Thursday, 10 July 2025, at approximately 13:30, the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team conducted an undercover operation at an illegal mining site at Spitskop, Portions 06 and 07.
During the operation, officers approached the site disguised as potential buyers of Chrome. Upon arrival, three male individuals engaged in negotiations with the officers. However, they quickly recognized the deception and fled the scene on foot, abandoning their illegal mining equipment. The team recovered and confiscated the abandoned equipment.
As they were about to leave the area, a silver Mercedes-Benz vehicle stopped them, and an unidentified male approached, aggressively questioning them about their presence and claiming to be an employer of the illegal miners.
Suspicious of his intentions, the police conducted a search of the man, resulting in the discovery of a plastic bag containing suspected precious minerals, believed to be gold. The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of suspected precious minerals and intimidation, among other charges.
The SAPS remains committed to combating illegal mining activities and ensuring the safety and security of our communities.
