On Monday, 14 July, at approximately 16h00, an intelligence-driven operation by the Mthatha-based OR Tambo District Task Team in the Qumbu Central Business District (CBD) led to the arrest of a 41-year-old male suspect. The suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistol with an obliterated serial number and eight rounds of ammunition.
As crime intelligence members spotted the suspect, the task team pounced on him and recovered the unlicensed firearm. The 41-year-old suspect appeared before Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 15 July 2025 and was granted R 2 000-00 bail with his case postponed to 04 September 2025 for further investigation. Ballistic tests will be conducted on the firearm to establish whether it was used in the commission of any prior crimes.
The OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana applauded all teams involved in the operation, stating that working together as a cohesive team towards achieving a common goal is the best practice.
