The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape have noted with concern the number of shoplifting cases reported and urges business owners, retailers and staff to be vigilant and alert and implement effective preventative measures.
The following safety measures are recommended to assist in deterring and identifying potential shoplifting activity:
1. Greet and acknowledge every customer upon entry.
2. Maintain a clean, well-organized store layout.
3. Familiarize yourself with common shoplifting tactics.
4. Be alert to individuals wearing oversized clothing or carrying large bags.
5. Optimize store layout with low shelving to maintain clear visibility.
6. Install a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system.
7. Use mirrors to eliminate blind spots.
8. Provide immediate customer service upon entry to deter theft.
9. Train employees to recognize suspicious behavior, such as frequently picking up and putting down items.
10. Utilize inventory management tools to monitor stock levels regularly.
11. Display high-risk items within the direct line of sight of staff.
12. Engage customers promptly, as early interaction can deter criminal intent.
13. Identify store areas where theft most commonly occurs.
14. Where possible, implement electronic tagging for merchandise.
15. Ensure adequate staffing levels to enhance monitoring and customer engagement.
16. Employ in-store security personnel to serve as both a deterrent and a support mechanism.
17. Monitor fitting rooms closely to prevent concealment of merchandise.
