The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Ms Violet Mathye, together with the District Commissioner of Waterberg, Major General Shamrhomba Masingi, led from the forefront during Operation Basadi conducted on Friday, 29 August and Saturday, 30 August 2025 in the Pienaarsrivier, Northam and Thabazimbi policing areas under Waterberg District.
The female-led operations yielded positive results, showcasing the capabilities of women in the law enforcement field. The operations were executed through high visibility policing, roadblocks, tracing of wanted suspects, stop-and-searches for illegal items such as drugs and firearms, enforcement of the Liquor Act and Road Traffic Act, as well as the distribution of pamphlets containing safety tips.
Officers were drawn from various police units across all five districts of the province, as well as the Provincial Office, including Crime Intelligence, Local Criminal Record Centre, Corporate Communications, Detectives, Provincial Operational Coordination Centre, Human Resource Management and Development, Technical Management Services and the Women’s Network, supported by their male counterparts (Men for Change).
Stakeholders who participated included Traffic officials from the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Community in Blue, CPF and YCOP members.
The officers also operated along the R101 in the Maubane and Pienaarsrivier policing areas during a cross-border Operation Basadi, which included law enforcement officers from Limpopo, Gauteng and North West provinces. MEC Mathye personally took part in the stop-and-search of vehicles and the distribution of pamphlets on road safety and crime prevention tips.
The two-day operation resulted in the arrest of 59 suspects for various crimes:
• 24 for contravening the Immigration Act
• 1 for possession of suspected stolen property
• 2 for selling liquor without a licence
• 4 for theft from a motor vehicle
• 1 for transporting an illegal immigrant
• 1 for contravening the Medicines Act
In addition, 60 traffic summonses amounting to R27 400.00 were issued for contravening the Road Traffic Act (RTA). Revenue collected included R7 517.00, while 72 warrants of arrest were executed with fines amounting to R20 400.00 paid.
Police also confiscated liquor, copper and other items.
Other actions executed included:
• Motor vehicles searched: 1 084
• People searched: 2 206
• Pamphlets distributed: 198
• Persons reached during awareness campaigns: 230
The arrested suspects will appear before their respective local Magistrates’ Courts on Monday, 01 September 2025.
