OR Tambo police, in their ongoing efforts to remove unlicensed firearms from the district, yielded positive results when three unlicensed firearms were recovered in Mqanduli and Mthatha between Tuesday and Wednesday by the Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Mthatha Central Crime Prevention members.
In the first incident, on Tuesday, 02 September 2025 at about 19:00, TRT members acted on information about a 39-year-old male suspect in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect was arrested in Mqanduli CBD, and a .38 revolver with an erased serial number was recovered in his possession after he failed to produce valid documentation.
In separate, unrelated incidents in Mthatha Old Payne, Mthatha Crime Prevention members acted on information and arrested two male suspects, aged 35 and 38, from different homesteads on Wednesday, 03 September 2025. The 38-year-old was found in possession of a CZ 75 9mm pistol with ammunition, as well as crystal meth sachets and mandrax pills. The 35-year-old was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with ammunition. Both suspects failed to produce valid firearm licences.
The three suspects will appear before the Mqanduli and Mthatha Magistrates’ Courts respectively, facing charges ranging from possession of unlicensed firearms to possession of drugs.
