Mi7 Armed Response has noted a concerning increase in the rate of opportunistic intruders gaining access to business and residential properties, stealing small items that can be carried away. In most of these cases, weaknesses in perimeter security were exploited.
For example, yesterday, a Mi7 Armed Response business client in the Pietermaritzburg CBD reported that a suspect had gained access into the property. Reaction Officers were quick to arrive, and caught the suspect on site attempting to steal the battery from a car parked on the premises. The suspect was linked to other similar cases in the area as well. In another case, a Mi7 Armed Response residential client in Ashburton said a man known to them scaled the fence and stole a brushcutter from an unlocked shed. The man was found nearby by Mi7 Reaction Officers and the item recovered.
In both cases, suspects scaled the perimeter walls to access yards and steal items. The rate of such crimes in the city is becoming more frequent.
We urge residents to be consider investing in better perimeter security: be it proper fencing, outside beams, perimeter beams, CCTV, or other preventative measures. Keep grass around the perimeter cut, make sure you have adequate lighting, and do not leave valuables out the open where they can be seen from the roads.
