A lifeless body was discovered this afternoon in a dense bush bordered by sugar cane, following an unexpected encounter by a local athlete during his routine training session in Inanda – KZN today (Saturday).
The 45-year-old runner was on his regular route along unpaved, gravel pathways when he paused beside a dense bush to relieve himself near Jabu Ngcobo Road. During this moment, he noticed an unusually large swarm of flies hovering over what appeared to be a charred object.
Upon investigation, he found the remains of an unidentified male, severely charred and burnt beyond recognition. The athlete immediately contacted the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre to report the discovery.
RUSA Paramedics & Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched. Preliminary observations suggested that the victim may have had a tyre around his neck when set alight, a method often associated with necklacing. The victim’s hands were also bound behind his back. Fresh leaves were found covering the body in an attempt to conceal it.
The identity of the deceased and the motive for the murder were not immediately confirmed.
