In an effort to recover and seize unlicensed firearms, the collection of intelligence information plays a pivotal role in ensuring that police operations are yielding positive results, as Friday’s intelligence driven operation led to the arrest of two men for possession of prohibited firearms and illegal possession of ammunition in Bhityi.
On Friday, 9 May 2025, members from the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in possession of a search warrant immediately operationalised the intelligence information and pounced on the premises in Mpande, Bhityi, which was said to be keeping illegal firearm (s).
Police on searching the premises, they recovered an unlicensed firearm with ammunition, and a 23-year-old man was arrested.
The team then proceeded to the second premises in Mpande, which was also said to be keeping illegal firearm(s). On arrival at the premises, the person of interest was found outside his premises and was searched. In his possession, police found an unlicensed revolver with ammunition. A 39-year-old man was arrested.
The two firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine any linkages to crimes committed with firearms in the country.
The two suspects will appear in the Bhityi magistrate’s court on Monday, 12 May 2025, to face charges of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
