Pretoria Volunteer Emergency Services responded to a call of an unconscious 14-year-old child found lying in the garden of a residence in Eastlynne.
The call was distributed across our response groups, and the first medical responders on scene were responders from Kilo Delta On Call, followed shortly by a #PVES First Responder. Due to the patient’s critical and unstable condition, Advanced Life Support (ALS) was requested, and a PVES ECP (Emergency Care Practitioner – Advanced Life Support) responded.
On arrival, ALS interventions were immediately initiated. Life-saving medication was administered while responders worked to determine the cause of the patient’s condition, considering multiple possible differential diagnoses. Despite all efforts, the patient did not regain consciousness, and urgent transport to hospital was required.
At approximately 19:00, a Gauteng Provincial (GPG) ambulance had still not arrived on scene. A request was made for private assistance, and @Bestcare Ambulance Services responded, arriving at 19:34. The critically ill child was transported to Steve Biko Academic Hospital with a PVES ECP accompanying.
The patient was stabilised at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and prepared for transfer to Kalafong Hospital. Due to a shortage of available beds, at approximately 22:30, our PVES ECP and an additional advanced responder remained at the hospital awaiting a Gauteng Provincial Critical Care Transport Unit for further transfer.
🙏 We keep this child in our thoughts and pray for a full and speedy recovery. Our heartfelt support goes out to the family during this difficult time.
