Police in Embalenhle have opened an inquest docket following a drowning incident that occurred on Sunday, 26 April 2026, at about 10:00 at Wellas River behind Ext 22, Embalenhle. Three people, a 59-year-old woman and two teenagers (17 and 19), drowned while being baptised in a river.
The SAPS Search and Rescue team was summoned to the scene, and the bodies of all three victims were recovered. They were all declared deceased at the scene.
Police urge community members to exercise extreme caution when conducting activities in and around open water, particularly during religious or recreational events.
