Acting on crime intelligence, the Durban Metropolitan Police Service Tracing Unit, working alongside the SAPS KZN Provincial PES Task Team and Area South Crime Intelligence, conducted a successful intelligence-driven operation in the uMkomaas policing area on Thursday, 16 July 2026.
During the operation, members recovered a Browning double-barrel shotgun and two live shotgun cartridges from a suspect who was unable to produce a valid firearm licence. A subsequent firearm verification confirmed that the shotgun is linked to a house robbery case reported in Klerksdorp.
A 43-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with:
● Unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm.
● Unlawful possession of ammunition.
The suspect was detained at SAPS uMkomaas, where the relevant case was registered. Investigations are continuing to determine whether the recovered firearm is linked to any additional criminal offences.
The operation was concluded successfully, with no injuries reported.
The Durban Metropolitan Police Service remains committed to working closely with our law enforcement partners to remove illegal firearms from our communities and ensure those involved in criminal activity are brought to justice.
