The Provincial Commissioner of the Northern Cape, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, led Operation Basadi in Pofadder and surrounding areas in celebration of National Women’s Day.
Lieutenant General Otola, accompanied by Provincial Heads, the ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner, Major General Monica Sebili, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, the Namakwa District Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, and Station Commanders from Pella, Pofadder and Kakamas executed operations in the ZF Mgcawu and Namakwa Districts.
The operation was also supported by members from the Department Transport, Safety and Liaison, the Provincial Traffic Department, Local Community Police Forums, Community in Blue Patrollers, Safety Volunteers, SAPS members from Springbok, K9 unit, Public Order Policing, Highway Patrol and stations from Pella, Aggenys, Onseepkans, Pofadder and Kakamas.
The operation commenced with a multi-disciplinary female dominated parade in Pofadder where Lieutenant General Otola addressed the members and the Pofadder community regarding GBVF related crimes and encouraged them to break the silence and speak out against any form of physical and emotional abuse. She also mentioned that the Northern Cape will be hosting the President of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa, on Friday, 09 August 2024, in Pofadder to celebrate Woman’s day.
The parade was followed by roadblocks on the N14 near Pella and Kakamas. A total of 262 vehicles and 194 persons were stopped and searched. 10 traffic fines to the value of R6700-00 were issued, and 650 crime prevention safety hints pamplets were distributed to motorists. Vigilant members in Pella searched a white Mahindra vehicle and found alleged stolen flood lights, a grinder and toliet rolls in the possession of a male (42) employed at a local Mine. The suspect will appear in court soon on charges of alleged theft.
Lieutenant General Otola commended all the SAPS members, external roleplayers, and the community for a well executed operation that was steered by the women in blue.
Operation Basadi will continue throughout the month of August in recognition of the bravery and courage displayed by women in law enforcement.
