Hikers Warned: Beware of Extreme Heat

Scorching conditions on the mountain today led to several heat-related incidents on Lion’s Head, as temperatures soared.

With the extreme heat expected to continue through the weekend, hikers and trail users are urged to take extra care when heading outdoors.

Stay safe with these hot-weather hiking tips:

Start early.

Avoid hiking between 12:00 and 15:00 – the hottest part of the day.

Choose shaded routes or hikes near water on warmer days.

Dress smart: light-coloured, loose-fitting, breathable, UPF-rated clothing.

Apply sunblock regularly and wear a hat.

Carry at least 500ml of water per hour you plan to be outdoors.

Think of your pets: rather leave dogs at home in hot weather.
