PVES Responders were alerted to a young adult who had overdosed on prescription medication. Due to a high demand for emergency ambulance services, both government and private ambulance providers experienced delays in availability.
Three PVES units responded and provided continuous patient care while awaiting ambulance transport. The medication involved carried a risk of seizures and respiratory depression. The patient’s respiratory status was closely monitored using capnography and pulse oximetry, and intravenous access was established as a precaution should seizure activity occur.
The patient was also found to be hypothermic and was actively warmed using three blankets. The patient remained under close observation until ambulance services arrived to continue her care.
