The collaborative efforts of members attached to the Provincial Anti-Hijacking Task Team, Tonga Visible Policing (VISPOL), Crime Intelligence, and Tonga Detectives have resulted in the arrest of four suspects found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in the Ehlanzeni District.
The arrests stem from an investigation into a Toyota Hilux GD-6 that was reportedly stolen in Mzinti on 29 May 2026. Following receipt of information regarding the stolen vehicle, members initiated tracking operations; however, the vehicle could not be recovered at that stage. Further intelligence led investigators to information regarding the possible whereabouts of individuals linked to the incident.
On Sunday, 08 June 2026, at approximately 01:30, law enforcement members operationalised the information and tactically approached the identified suspects. During the operation, the suspects were searched, and four firearms with filed-off serial numbers were recovered.
The following items were seized:
• Four (04) pistols with serial numbers removed; and
• Thirty (30) rounds of live ammunition.
The four suspects, aged between 22 and 42, were subsequently arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Tonga Magistrate’s Court soon. Investigations are continuing, including determining whether the recovered firearms may be linked to other criminal activities in the province.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the multidisciplinary team for their commitment and swift response.
