Members of Bloemfontein Flying Squad received and operationalised intelligence about a truck suspected to be transporting presumably stolen copper cable from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg.
The White Volvo STRALIS 430 horse pulling two trailers was spotted on the N1 National Road north-bound lane, and the police pulled it over during the early hours of Saturday, 25 July 2026. The truck was stopped at the back of a filing station in Glen Police Station precinct, and preliminary investigation started.
The police first called a supervisor at Centlec (SOC) Ltd low voltage, attached to Engineering Wires section. Some of the copper cables in the bags were positively identified as Centlec property.
The 43-year-old male was immediately placed under arrest. He informed the police that he travelled from Wadeville – Germiston to Gemini Scrap Metal, Watkey Street – Oranjesig to collect recyclable cargo.
The truck was then escorted to Bainsvlei Police Station grounds for further handling. More copper cables, estimated to be worth more than R300 000, were identified by Telkom and Eskom technicians.
A case of tampering, damaging or destroying essential infrastructure in terms of Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015, and Possession of presumably stolen property was opened at Glen Police Station. The 43-year-old suspect will appear in Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court soon.
