The new month has begun on a tragic note in the Vaal after a collision between a Greyhound bus and a minibus taxi claimed several lives and left others injured on the morning of Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
The crash occurred near The Palms Shopping Centre. A white Quantum minibus taxi and a Greyhound bus were involved in the collision.
The taxi came to a stop near the traffic lights, facing in the direction of Vaal Mall, while the bus came to rest on Barrage Road in the direction of Vereeniging.
Emergency services remain at the scene. Rescue teams are currently lifting the bus to determine whether there are any passengers trapped or injured underneath or inside the vehicle.
At the time of publication, three bodies had been covered with foil blankets; two next to the taxi and one near the bus.
The exact number of fatalities has not yet been officially confirmed, as emergency personnel continue with rescue and recovery operations.
