The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety continues with its Phuza Weekend Operations across the province this weekend. The focus remains on removing dangerous and reckless drivers from our roads to save lives.
The Department is concerned about the high number of drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during the month of 01 – 30 June 2026.
A total of 107 drivers were arrested province-wide for drunk driving. The Department notes with serious concern that Vhembe District recorded the highest number of arrests (41), and *Capricorn District recorded the highest alcohol reading of 1.11mg/1000ml* – more than double the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml breath alcohol.
Drinking and driving destroys families. No celebration is worth a life, or a criminal record. Law enforcement officers will be out in full force this weekend. Roadblocks, patrols and breathalyser tests will continue day and night.
To motorists:
1. Do not drink and drive. If you drink, arrange alternative transport.
2. Be patient on our roads. Traffic volumes are expected to increase, especially on the N1 Northbound coming into Limpopo from Gauteng, particularly at tollgates. Plan your trip and avoid rushing.
3. Report reckless driving and accidents. Call our 24-hour Toll-Free Control Room on 0800 00694.
Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Let us work together to ensure that every road user arrives alive.
